Submit your Congress Abstract Today!

It is time again to submit abstracts for Congress!

Submit your abstract now for the ONS 35th Annual Congress, May 13 - 16, 2010, in San Diego, CA.

Abstract presentations are focused in areas of administration/leadership development, clinical/evidence-based practice, education, and research study.  Selection of abstracts will be based solely on a blind peer review.

Abstracts may be selected for presentation in podium sessions or presentation as a poster, and published. Abstracts submitted must be of the author’s own completed work, work in progress, or may or may not have been presented previously at the local or regional level. The primary authors must be a registered nurse, a licensed healthcare professional, or a doctoral prepared individual.  The primary author must also consent to be the contact person.  The scoring criteria for submitted abstracts is based on significance, background, a clearly defined purpose, measurable goals, clear presentation, and cutting-edge innovation.

Need help preparing an abstract? The idea of submitting an abstract for Congress can be intimidating and many questions about the process and structure may arise.  Through the ONS Mentorship Program for Abstract Writers, novice abstract writers are partnered with experienced mentors to help guide you through the process.  For more information, please contact, ONS Education toll free at 1-866-257-4ONS or email at education@ons.org.

Don’t miss the deadline!Submission deadline is Tuesday, January 12th.  Please visit the abstract submission website at http://onsopcontent.ons.org/Meetings/Abstracts/abstractsubmission/default.asp to review the abstract submission instructions and to submit your abstract!

What's new at the National Level - Under construction

The National ONS website is undergoing an upgrade so some of the links we had listed are no longer active.  I have removed some content from our site and when it is reactivated on the National site, I replace it.

Sorry for the inconvenience.  In the meantime, check out the changes to the National ONS site at www.ons.org.

Thanks,

Martha

Kaleidoscope

Remember 2008’s “Frosted Pink With a Twist”?  Well, “Kaleidoscope” is the name of this year’s event which will be aired on Thanksgiving Day.  This family-oriented TV special will focus on women and cancer.

Kaleidoscope is a holiday entertainment variety special featuring Olympic skating champions and GRAMMY Award-winning music artists. Viewers will be thrilled with the historic return of the legendary Scott Hamilton and Dorothy Hamill matched with fellow cancer survivor Olivia Newton-John. Kaleidoscope addresses issues surrounding women and cancer through an extraordinary collaboration with 10 advocacy partners.  More than 15,000 cancer survivors are expected to attend the taping of Kaleidoscope in our nation’s capitol.

Tune into FOX from 4:00-5:30 p.m. (EST) on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 26) 2009 to watch Kaleidoscope unite Survivorship, Sport, and Song into this unparalleled event and celebration.

ONS is one of the advocacy partners for Kaleidoscope, and we want to encourage our members to spread the word about the program to their families, patients, and patients’ families.  More information will be coming as plans for the event progress.

BLURRING THE ROLES: NURSES AS FAMILY CAREGIVERS FOR PATIENTS WITH CANCER

Oncology nurses care for patients compassionately, from diagnosis to cure or death. They get to know patients and their families intimately. But when the person with cancer is a family member, the role of oncology nurse can get blurred with the role of spouse, child, sibling, or grandchild. No statistics are available on the number of oncology nurses who are involved in the care of a family member. However, those nurses' experiences when caring for a family member are different than for non-nurses, as two ONS members share in the November issue of ONS Connect
